Nov 28, 2024 – WMD’s launch and AI strengths featured in Korea Economic Daily
An advisory firm specializing in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) for small and medium-sized businesses has been launched. It was founded by experts who previously handled M&A at law firms, accounting firms, and securities firms. A key feature is their use of artificial intelligence (AI) in M&A transactions.
According to the investment banking (IB) industry on the 27th, the M&A advisory firm WMD was established with Jemin Lee, a lawyer and accountant, as its central figure. Mr. Lee, formerly of Samjong KPMG, founded WMD while leading the law office The ALL. Possessing both legal and accounting knowledge, Mr. Lee is an industry specialist who can oversee all aspects of M&A work.
Apart from Mr. Lee, WMD also includes various M&A experts. This includes director Sangbin Kwak from Kim & Chang, director Sanghyun Lee from EY Hanyoung and KB Securities ECM Department, and director Sungsu Jang, who has startup experience after working at Samil PwC.
The reason WMD targets small and medium-sized enterprises is that these companies have often been somewhat neglected by the existing advisory industry. A representative from WMD stated, "Because small and medium-sized enterprises have smaller deal sizes, even if consultancy contracts are made, they are often neglected without receiving proper advisory," adding, "Solving this problem and increasing the success rate of SME M&A is WMD's goal."
WMD uses AI and data to enhance the efficiency of M&A transactions for SMEs. By leveraging a database of one million companies secured internally and using AI, they streamline the creation of teaser letters and investment memorandums (IMs). They also receive AI assistance in matching sellers and buyers.
Jemin Lee, CEO of WMD, stated, "We aim to maximize efficiency in the neglected SME M&A market by establishing an AI system in the M&A field," adding that "increasing the success rate of deals is the company's top priority."
